John Walker is one of Canada's most prolific documentary filmmakers. He has won international acclaim for his films that are personal, lyrical and express a deep understanding of the human condition. They have been widely broadcast and have appeared at major international film festivals from Toronto to Tokyo.
From his personal exploration of myth and imagination in THE FAIRY FAITH to A DRUMMERS DREAM or MEN OF THE DEEPS, his films defy conventional approaches. Walker co-produced, wrote and directed the provocative feature film PASSAGE, which was hailed as one of the great triumphs in Canadian documentary film history. His recent films include ARCTIC DEFENDERS, QUÉBEC MY COUNTRY MON PAYS, and ASSHOLES: A THEORY.
He has received over 60 Canadian and international nominations and awards – including four nominations for the Allan King Award for Excellence in Documentary. Nineteen of these are from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television, including the coveted Donald Brittain Award for best social/political documentary.
His passionate commitment to the documentary form led him to co-found the Documentary Organization of Canada. In 2018, he was honoured with a Hot Docs Focus On Retrospective and a Canadian Society of Cinematographers Masters Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Art of Cinematography.
