The Directors Guild of Canada, Manitoba District Council partners with Film Training Manitoba to offer a variety of training opportunities to our membership and permittees.

 

ENTRY LEVEL TRAINING

 

The following entry level training requirements are mandatory for approval of your DGC Membership Application:

 

  1. Set Orientation – Set orientation encompasses an understanding of the filmmaking process, and includes familiarity with the various procedures that are vitally important for communication and scheduling on a day-to-day basis. Since productions can employ many people in diverse fields, crew members rely on set etiquette for standards of behaviour, terminology and communication between departments. This is an online course offered by Film Training Manitoba that can be completed at any time. If you have already received your certificate for this course as a DGC permittee, you are not required to take the course again for DGC Membership.
  2. Safety Awareness – This course explores the potential hazards and procedures to follow in order to keep yourself, and those around you safe. Participants receive instruction on the use of special protective equipment, location of first aid and emergency response equipment, and procedural information regarding reportage of unsafe or potentially dangerous conditions that could affect workers, co-workers and third parties. This is an online course offered by Film Training Manitoba that can be completed at any time.
  3. WHMIS - The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) is Canada's national hazard communication standard.
  4. Intro to Paper – This course provides an introduction to the many forms and documents encountered when working on a motion picture production. This course outlines the standard paperwork used in production offices including the start pack, scheduling documents, call sheets, sides, the daily production report, and basic accounting forms. This is an online course offered by Film Training Manitoba that can be completed at any time.
  5. Locations – This course provides training in the roles and responsibilities of the Locations Department. Topics include: the implementation of logistical plans for the production unit; professional standards of conduct including maintaining filming locations per contracts and monitoring the safety of cast, crew and public. This is an online course offered by Film Training Manitoba that can completed at any time.
  6. Propane Safety – This course provides practical information on the safe handling techniques of propane. Participants are introduced to the basics of propane storage, operation, refuelling of propane cylinders, fire safety procedures and the uses of propane on set. This is an online course offered by Film Training Manitoba that can be completed at any time.

ADVANCED LEVEL TRAINING

Film Training Manitoba offers department specific training through a variety of programs to DGC Members. This training includes:

  • Mentorship Partnership
  • Crew Course and Travel Program
  • Career Focus Crew Internship Program

IN-CLASSROOM WORKSHOPS AND SEMINARS

MENTORSHIP PARTNERSHIP

Film Training Manitoba’s mentorship program provides opportunities for on-the-job training for crew that are advancing to more senior job classifications. FTM will contract an established and experienced crew member to mentor an emerging department head and manager, equipping the mentee with the best practices in our industry.

The mentorship partnership can be arranged for pre-production, principle photography, post-production or a combination of the three.

CREW COURSE AND TRAVEL PROGRAM

CAREER FOCUS CREW INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The Career Focus Program is an important part of Film Training Manitoba’s overall training strategy. FTM is committed to helping recent graduates in Manitoba gain on-the-job experience and apply the skills acquired through education to the local industry. The program is well known to employers in the industry and has a high impact on the development of entry-level workers.
