A MESSAGE FROM DGC PRESIDENT TIM SOUTHAM ON THE PASSING OF GILES WALKER

Walker was an award-winning documentary and film director

“I am saddened to learn of the passing of Giles Walker last week on March 23rd after a courageous and hard-fought 10-year battle with cancer.

“Giles was a long-time member of the DGC and had a distinguished career that spanned over 45 years, most notably with his innovative Oscar-nominated live-action short Bravery in the Field, the political fresco he painted with his dramatic miniseries René Lévesque, and the refined character work of his contributions to the series Emily of the New Moon.

Gilles was a pioneer in the docufiction movement at the National Film Board of Canada in the mid 1970s and joined the DGC in 1991 as his Gemini and Genie award nominated and winning work took him deeper into drama and comedy. He was a leading member of Québec's filmmaking community, leading by example in his fight for director rights in his home province and across Canada. His involvement and dedication to filmmaking will be cherished and he will be deeply missed by all."
