The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) and the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) and have reached a new scale agreement, extending through July 30th, 2025 and ensuring fair compensation for Directors, proportional to budget. This deal has been ratified by DGC Members.

“Filmmakers are at the heart of every NFB production. With the renewal of the NFB-DGC scale agreement, we are renewing our commitment to directors and our role as industry leaders. Fair compensation and working conditions are essential to good relations. We’re thrilled to be continuing our relationship with the DGC, and we look forward to deepening our relationship with Canada’s diverse pool of talented creators. I would like to thank those who took part in the negotiations for their full commitment to the task,” said Julie Roy, NFB Director General of Creation and Innovation.

“This agreement puts NFB productions in line with industry standards, basing Directors’ compensation on budget, not the length of their film, and limiting production delays,” said DGC President Warren P. Sonoda. “We believe this deal not only guarantees a fair contract for our members, but will strengthen the NFB in helping it to attract the most talented creators our industry has to offer.”

The new DGC/NFB scale agreement (2022-2025) takes effect January 31st, 2022. The agreement covers documentary, drama and animation productions and provides the minimum terms for Director compensation and creative rights.
