The Directors Guild of Canada President Warren P. Sonoda issued the following statement after the publication of the Federal Government Policy Direction to the CRTC to implement The Online Streaming Act:

“On behalf of DGC members, I commend the Minister and the Federal Government on the release of the Policy Directive to the CRTC. This is an important step in the implementation of the Online Streaming Act, modernizing our broadcasting system, safeguarding our national sovereignty, and ensuring that diverse Canadian and Indigenous stories from all regions will continue to be told.”

“The DGC will continue to advocate for the establishment of robust expenditure and programming requirements, fostering a resilient and inclusive domestic production market that maximizes the use of Canadian creative talent. The new Online Streaming Act also benefits Canadian audiences by enabling the creation of a wide range of programming, including feature films and feature documentaries, already popular on the major streaming platforms operating in Canada.”

“Having actively engaged in every step of the Broadcasting Act modernization process over the last five years to set new regulatory standards for online streamers, we are pleased to take part in the implementation of the new framework. Soon, all stakeholders in the system will be mandated to contribute to the creation of high-quality Canadian content.”
