DGC Kicks Off “Here’s How” Climate action Campaign

Directors Guild toolkit guides departments to cut carbon footprint

Vancouver – As the 6th Annual Sustainable Production Forum begins in Vancouver, the Directors Guild of Canada has announced the first phase of its new campaign “DGC Green: Here’s How.”

The campaign’s starts with the launch of a new microsite at dgcgreen.ca and #HeresHow.

“Action on climate change has now become a major focus in the industry,” said DGC President Warren P. Sonoda. “More and more, studios and producers realize that cutting emissions can both protect the planet and cut costs. A growing number of crew see it as an ethical responsibility to be more sustainable. The Here’s How toolkit gives DGC Members practical ways to make that change.”

The microsite provides “Top Tips” that each of the eight caucuses within the DGC can take to help reduce the climate change impact of screen production as well as highlighting industry resources available from other organizations across Canada and internationally. Tips include everything from simple steps individuals can take like ways to reduce printing to suggested steps that can be taken on a production level to cut the industry’s reliance on diesel generators by using grid power.

“We have an opportunity and a responsibility to lead our productions to a greener way of filmmaking. The ‘Top Tips’ on this site are our first step in showcasing and sharing real solutions that our members have already been implementing on their shows. Together - we can move towards a greener industry standard.” said Clara George, Chair of the National Sustainability & Climate Action Committee. “As the Sustainable Production Forum and COP26 get underway, it's time we move forward together towards a greener industry standard.”

George, along with DGC Members Marian Wihak and Hans Dayal, will be appearing at the Sustainable Production Forum on the panels listed below.

The campaign’s next phase will continue with recruiting members to help spread the word about the campaign and how we can take action to make production more climate friendly. Any interested industry member can sign up for more information at dgcgreen.ca.
