DGC National President Warren P. Sonoda mourns the passing of Canadian film icon and pioneer Norman Jewison whose contributions to the film & television landscape shaped the industry.

“It is with immense gratitude and sadness that we reflect on the life and passing of DGC Honorary Life Member Norman Jewison at the age of 97.

“Norman was a prolific filmmaker who has and will continue to inspire generations through his films and advocacy. He will be remembered for his versatility as his critically acclaimed works ranged from comedies to social dramas, many of which focused on racial injustice. Some of his best-known works include Moonstruck (1987), Fiddler on the Roof (1971) and In the Heat of the Night (1967), which took home the Best Picture Oscar at the 40th Annual Academy Awards. Overall, Norman’s films received 45 Academy Award nominations and won 12 Oscars. In 2002 he was honoured with the DGC Lifetime Achievement Award.

“In 1988, Norman founded the Canadian Film Centre (CFC), a charitable organization that aims to shape the future of Canadian storytelling by empowering young filmmakers through training and mentorship programs. The CFC has a base of nearly 2000 proud alumni, many of which are DGC Members and nearly 80% of which are currently working in screen-based industries. His support of young artists was unwavering and his steadfast commitment to expanding the bounds of the industry is as critical to his towering legacy as his work behind the camera. For both his indispensable body of work and his nurturing of new talent, his 1982 Officer of the Order of Canada title was elevated to Companion of the Order of Canada in 1992.

“Norman, we thank you and honour you for all that you have done for Canadian film and will continue to do so through your incredible legacy and the invaluable opportunities provided by the CFC to Canada’s next greatest filmmakers.”
