Hot Docs announced a generous gift of $5-million from the Rogers Foundation at a press conference this past Thursday. This gift will enable Hot Docs to purchase the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema, which will now operate under the name Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema. The gift will also fund a $1-million production fund named the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Fund to provide support for Canadian documentary filmmakers.

“Toronto was once home to over 65 neighbourhood cinemas and only a handful remains today. The vision and generosity of the Tabatznik Family and now the Rogers Family have not only helped save the beloved Bloor Cinema, but they have helped Hot Docs do the unimaginable – establish one of the only doc-focused theatres in the world,” said Chris McDonald, president of Hot Docs. “Toronto audiences are curious, loyal and unafraid of intelligent and thought-provoking stories. The continued success of this venue is a testament to their passion.”

The Directors Guild of Canada congratulates Hot Docs and supports their mission to bring documentaries to the world.
