MONIQUE LAFONTAINE APPOINTED TO CRTC

Statement from Directors Guild of Canada President Tim Southam

Toronto – “On behalf of the Directors Guild of Canada, it gives me great pleasure to extend my warmest congratulations to Monique Lafontaine on her appointment as Ontario Commissioner for the CRTC.

“Ms. Lafontaine's bone-deep commitment to Canadian culture and her keen understanding of the creative sector - including three years as the DGC’s General Counsel and Director of Regulatory Affairs and more recently, three years as outside consultant - will be tremendous assets in the important work of modernizing our sector. During Ms. Lafontaine's time at the DGC, I witnessed first-hand her capacity to work collaboratively, think creatively and develop innovative solutions to complex issues. She has the ability to articulate in a lucid and deeply informed manner, not only our sector’s challenges, but a range of real world solutions. We wish Ms. Lafontaine success in her new role and look forward to working with her.

“This appointment demonstrates the latest step in Minister Mélanie Joly's efforts to renew Canadian cultural policy. Earlier this year, the DGC along with others in the creative community, called on the government to emphasize greater diversity and seek out candidates for public service with experience within the creative sector. We called for her to ask the CRTC itself to reconsider key decisions set to slash support for Canadian film & television production. We are grateful that Minister Joly heard our call to action and we cannot imagine a better choice for this important mandate.”
