R.T. Thorne To Chair DGC BIPOC Members Committee

Directors Guild President Tim Southam announces appointment

Directors Guild of Canada President Tim Southam made the following statement regarding appointment of DGC Director member R.T. Thorne as chair of the newly formed BIPOC Members Committee.

“I am pleased and proud to announce that R.T. Thorne has accepted to chair the DGC’s BIPOC Members Committee. R.T. brings the respect and confidence of countless members of our community to a role that will help shape the future of both our Guild and our industry.”

“Today’s announcement is an important step for the DGC in rising to meet renewed calls for fairness and equality in our industry, but it will not be the last. R.T. will lay out his vision for how this committee intends to reach out and engage BIPOC members in the coming days. As he does, know that your Guild stands shoulder-to-shoulder with him and in solidarity with Black, Indigenous and people of colour in the fight for a society free of systemic racism and hate.”

R.T. Thorne has emerged as one of Canada's most eclectic storytellers since debuting on the music video filmmaking scene over a decade ago. He is the Creator, Executive Producer, Director, and Co-Writer of Utopia Falls, a genre bending, Afrofuturistic science fiction series that premiered as a Hulu Original in 2020.

“Change is a great thing,” R.T. added. “It means growth, refinement, progress, so I’m looking forward to working alongside a dedicated group of like-minded DGC members to fight systemic racism and help create much needed change in our industry."
