The Directors Guild of Canada (DGC) has released a short study on the current state of feature films on streaming platforms operating in Canada. The purpose of this study is to gain a better understanding of the availability of film titles, including feature-length documentaries, on online streaming platforms, both foreign and domestic.

The report confirms the prevalence of feature films on both Canadian and foreign subscription video on demand (SVOD) and transactional video on demand (TVOD) platforms. In fact, the majority of streaming services’ content catalogs are comprised of movie titles, ranging from a minimum of 60% to over 90%.

The documentary genre is also well represented on streaming platforms and is increasingly popular among Canadian audiences, with long-form documentaries accounting for 22% of all feature films titles.

The report data shows the strong demand for this genre on online streaming platforms operating in Canada.
