The Directors Rights Collective of Canada (DRCC) is a non-profit corporation, established by the Directors Guild of Canada in 1998 as a separate individual organization with a mandate to collect and distribute royalties derived from foreign broadcasts to which film and television directors are entitled under national copyright legislation in Europe and elsewhere. The DRCC collects on behalf of audiovisual Directors working in all genres, including animation, documentary, feature film, television series and short form film. In Europe, and increasingly elsewhere, there exist copyright laws that identify audiovisual directors as the authors of their work. Authorship entitles directors to secondary use levies whenever their work is broadcast in a country which maintains these laws. These funds exist outside of any agreements with producers or studios and pass directly from our foreign partners, through the DRCC, to the director. All director members of the DGC are automatically members of the DRCC though the reverse is not the case.

If you are a filmmaker working in Canada, see what membership to the DRCC can do for you. You never know, we may already have money for you.

How do I join?

Membership is free for members of the Directors Guild of Canada (DGC). For Directors who are not members of the DGC, a one-time $50 membership fee will be deducted on first royalties collected. Once you join, your personal and credit information is entered into the centralized European database used by all collecting societies to determine authorial rights allocation. This is a crucial step in ensuring that you receive all the royalties you are owed.

When and how do I get paid?

The DRCC issues payments annually to all members with royalties owing in November/December. While we are happy to write cheques, we encourage you to take advantage of Direct Deposit. Direct Deposit ensures swift and sure payment and mitigates having to re-issue lost or missing cheques.
